Buick's decision to use Opel design and engineering for key new models opens up a cookie jar full of tasty new vehicles. The lovely Opel Insignia station wagon could grace American roads as a Buick -- if the 2011 Regal cloned from the Insignia sedan catches on, and if Buick rolls the dice on an uncertain market segment.

The 2011 Buick Regal has received top crash performance marks from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, General Motors Co. said Monday.

Not everyone is thrilled with the Buick Regal I reviewed last week. "The interior is for very small people and there is zero legroom in the backseat; this car is a joke! I expect Buicks to have roomy interiors for normal size people."

There's nothing traditional about this Buick. It may carry the Regal name but its taut ride and crisp handling are nothing like the ginormous Regals that floated down highways like lumbering dinosaurs years ago.
